Walt Disney's Comics and Stories
The 12 cent issues Gold Key & Whitman
Last Updated 12/04/07 01:01 PM
(1962-68)
This is where finding the issue # gets a little harder. I'm not sure what Whitman had in mind when they started hiding the issue #, but as a collector it drove me nuts until I figured out that you could get the issue # by multiplying the volume # minus one by 12 & adding the issue #. Then they stopped using that code. How did I find the issue # then? As it turns out, every issue # is contained on the first page on the lower left or right of the bottom panels (I wish I had figured that out sooner it would have saved me a lot multiplying by 12) I think I have all of them properly labeled, but some issues have really small lettering, even with a magnifying glass. I went in to great detail because half the comic dealers I met did not know which issues they had (this sometimes worked in my favor)
Note: most of these comics are in Overstreet for less than the price listed. The higher prices reflect replacement costs. It took me a while but, I have nearly all the twelve cent Walt Disney's Comics & Stories. I thought I had most of them, but it turns out that I only had about half. There are sixty nine of them. I am missing #269, #270, #272, #277, #278, #290, & #297: as of 1/10/01. I do have scans for #269 & 290, but they are sold. Ninety Four Percent of all twelve cent issues.

Okay, you said you had all the twelve cent issues but seven. Where are #331 & #332? Answer: There are two versions of these comics twelve cent & fifteen cent comics. I have the fifteen cent versions.
I really like Walt Disney's Comics & Stories the best, because they have been published since 1940, they are relatively in expensive(they cost a fifth of what a super hero comic of the same age costs), almost all of them have a Barks' stories, & my favorite Barks' stories are Barks' ten pagers (my favorite is reprinted in #304) from Walt Disney's Comics & Stories. The Golden Age comics are a little higher, but many have reprints that are very affordable. Another thing I like, is that I can produce a comic that was published on just about anybody's birthday. Provided that they are not too much older than I.
A word about Moms and comics. Mother's are wonderful & have to be monitored very carefully, else they will throw away your copy of Superman #1. One of the best comic stories that I have ever heard is that someone's Mother threw away either Superman #1 or Action #1. I have heard it from several people & find it difficult to believe. I am sure it had to happen that a Mom, or many Moms threw out millions of dollars worth of comics on today's market. I shudder when I think how many great comics were destroyed in the paper drives of World War II. I just did not believe any of my friends. They were not old enough. If you are in your 40's & you want to tell someone your Mom threw away a comic; Say she threw away the Brave & the Bold #28, Spiderman #1, Showcase #4, or Fantastic Four #1. My response has always been the same. I did not let my Mom alone with my comics. I still have them all. I know that I have sold quite a few of my comics, but I replace them as fast as I sell them.

Note: Every comic has a scanned image. They are scanned at 50% & converted to gifs each image averages 75K in size. Gifs are good because they load in three stages. You can tell if you want that image by the time it has only partially loaded. If not you can use the back button on your browser. |
