Donald Duck
Whitman & Gold Key
(1976-1982)
I think Donald is a super hero. Donald does not have extraordinary powers. He is every man put in extraordinary situations. Donald always rises to any situation by doing the right thing. He does not have the wealth of Scrooge or the luck of Gladstone, but his heart is always in the right place. My favorite part of Donald's personality is when he rails against the basic unfairness of life. "...life is not fair. It is just fairer than death, that's all." (from "The Princess Bride" by William Goldman. It is one of the funniest books I have ever read.)
Note: Donald Duck #216 & #217 have #216 on cover.
I don't think Whitman or Disney really understood who really bought their comic books. Children are not the one's that were buying Disney (Bark's Ducks) it was Adults. Gladstone understood that collectors were looking for that one Barks tale that they had missed. In this group there are not many Barks tales, but there are a few gems for a reasonable price.
Donald Duck (Dell) FC & #26-#83
More Donald (Gold Key) (#85-173)
"...what a tangled web we weave..." this is what crossed my mind when I started to add links to the original comics. I also thought, Man, I have got a lot of Donald Duck comic books, reprints as well as originals. These pages are getting more complex & yet they have become second nature to me. So much so that I tend to get off beam sometimes.......

There are a lot of good non Barks stories. In fact, some of my favorite stories are not by Barks. After all a good story is a good story, even if the artwork could be better. I suspect that these comics will sell pretty fast. I think that is why I have put off, putting up these comics, although I bought these over a year ago. The thing is, at one time I always have a thousand comics that I need to put up & lots of web pages to update or fix. The reason this page came up, was that I was making minor modifications and noticed that I was nearly out of comics, so I added thirty nine new comics. Bla, bla, bla, bla

If you would like to support my site & you do not wish to buy any comics, send me an e-mail. Tell me what you think. Some of the best ideas came from e-mails I received. I probably would not have taken the time to write out detailed descriptions if it were not for some questions I received through e-mail. Not that anyone asked me to do it, but they would ask questions about books that I had just worked on and if I had written down the information at the time, I could find it at a glance. Again my motivation wanes. Must play Warcraft......Kill Humans!!!!......Okay, I defeated two scenarios quite convincingly...... These comics have been sitting in stacks all over my house. First in the Living room for labeling. Next on my night stand for reading and then in my office for neglecting. It will be nice to put these away. Bla, bla, bla.....And now the end is near......
Note: Every comic has a scanned image. They are scanned at 50% & converted to gifs each image averages 75K in size. |

history, dateline 1934. Max C. Gaines thought that if the giveaway comics were so successful, that he could sell them for a dime. Eastern Color published 35,000 copies of Famous Funnies #1 for Dell in July of 1934. They sold out.
Ward: What type of girl would you have Wally marry? June: Oh, some very sensible girl from a nice family -- one with both feet on the ground, who's a good cook and can keep a nice house and see that he's happy. Ward: Dear, I got the last one of those. |
